Final Paschal Reflections on Creation
“The heavens and the earth and all their ornamentation were completed. God completed his works that he did on the sixth day, and on the seventh day he ceased from all his works that he did. God blessed the seventh day and made it sacred, because on it he ceased from all his works that God began to do” (Genesis 2:1-3).
Thus ends the seven days of Creation. I’m exhausted. Holy Week begins today which means that I am at the end of a very, very long Lenten season. This began on the Valentine’s Day and will be completed on Cinco de Mayo.
I am moving this week, too, speaking of themes of passing from one state to another.
In this case, rather than from darkness to illumination I am going from a casita with a broken heater to a home with A/C. The desert has been my personal Egypt since moving here two years ago without a real, working A/C unit in any place I’ve lived thus far. So, while it may not be to the same degree of Exodus, I am leaving the oppression of the heat for central cooling.
And in a fallen world, sometimes that is enough.
I digress.
I appreciate anyone who hung with me this past week while I was contemplating the Creation story, thank you. I hope that it was of some use. While I am exhausted, I plan to look closer at Genesis in the months ahead, because there is something quite stirring in it that I failed to recognize in my previous read-throughs of the first book of the Bible.
Anyway, Christ has entered Jerusalem sitting on a donkey. Our triumphant King comes to us as a humble servant, ready to lay down His life for all.
Instead of talking about God I am going to experience Him this week. I’ll be celebrating Pascha at a Catholic monastery, go figure, so I’ll be shining a light in the darkness exclaiming that our Lord and King has risen from the dead surrounded by my brethren who are in the midst of Eastertide.
This seems most appropriate, given the eternal nature of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.
I’ll be back after Pascha with some reflections regarding this never-ending Lent. There will be talk of Resurrection, forgiveness, and huffing myself stupid on freon.
God bless.
